Introduction

"In-Between Spaces: Mediterranean Style and Blurred Boundaries"

Establishing a New Hierarchy of Open Spaces

In the Mediterranean context, life often begins outdoors, and a significant portion of daily life unfolds in open air. Outdoor kitchens and seating areas are not merely extensions, but central elements of living. These spaces establish a strong relationship with the interior, expanding the living environment and creating permeable, undefined thresholds between inside and outside.

The project deliberately blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior, taking advantage of Barcelona’s mild climate while reinterpreting its connection to Mediterranean vernacular architecture. This climate, which allows for year-round outdoor living, becomes a primary driver of the spatial organization.

The Idea

How does life begin in the Mediterranean and how does it shape the city?

Courtyards – Patio

The project proposes a patio house typology, a characteristic element of Mediterranean culture. In this typology, the dwelling is structured around a semi-open center, and this area becomes the main focal point of the building. All interior spaces are arranged around this patio. The patio functions as the heart of the dwelling; it is a "green" oasis that brings light, air, and nature inside.
