Introduction

The Çukurcuma Apartment project began with the question, "Can the concave relationship between the plot and the street be transformed into a space that generates natural light?" It was a reinterpretation of the existing structure, preserving its spatial memory.

Instead of completely erasing the spatial memory of the existing building, which had reached the end of its lifespan, the project aimed to reinterpret it, creating a building articulation enriched with natural light. The curving texture of the street transforms into a light void in the plan organization, fragmenting the building mass and providing continuity in the interior spaces.

The setback and semi-open area defined at ground level create a threshold within the narrow street scale of Çukurcuma. The building proposes a contemporary language that integrates with the surrounding historical fabric but does not imitate it.

The choice of materials for the facade and interior spaces references the layered character of the area, while the plan scheme is structured through light, depth, and transitions. Thus, the apartment becomes not merely a renovated residential building, but a spatial interpretation that engages in dialogue with the scale of the street.
